So long, Nickel Creek

I discovered this past week that Nickel Creek are going to take an indefinite hiatus following the end of this year's tour. I am bummed. Obviously, since they made the announcement in August 2006, I am not their Number 1 Fan!, but I have enjoyed their music quite a bit over the last several years. Time is running out but it is not too late to go see them yourself! We are lucky enough to have them playing at the House of Blues in New Orleans on Thursday so we're heading down to see them. I kept meaning to get to one of their concerts. I'm glad that they are coming to Louisiana now that I know that I've got a limited opportunity to do so.

If you want some free legal Nickel Creek goodness, check them out performing with Glen Phillips (formerly of Toad the Wet Sprocket) as the Mutual Admiration Society on the Live Music Archive. That should keep you busy for a while.

I first heard Nickel Creek when they backed up some of Glen's early solo work following the breakup of Toad. Then I met a big fan of theirs one summer while I was working at Virginia Tech, who let me listen to some live cuts she had, and let me borrow their first CD (she also introduced me to Eddie from Ohio, for which I am also grateful). That summer I worked with the Summer Conference Staff, hosting the camps, conventions, and other groups that came to use the campus while school was out. One of the buildings that I worked in was the now infamous West Ambler-Johnston, where I think I tested about 1400 room keys before a regional Future Farmers of America meeting, and then collected and sorted all those keys after the group left.

It's been a pretty horrible day for us Southwestern Virginians. I think Erica said it pretty well. Just last week CNN named Blacksburg the #4 place to retire young in the US (appropriately with a photo that looks like it came from Steppin' Out). I still think it's an awesome place. I'm sorry it had to see such tragedy today.

So it goes. (So long, Kurt).

Hey Jack. Tell your parents I'm thinking about them, and I am glad that they are okay--even so I am sure that it will be hard for everyone at VT for a long time after such a horrible violation. Everyone wants to feel safe in their homes and work places and schools, and it is a terrible feeling to have that taken away. It makes me count my blessings that we don't live somewhere this kind of violence is a daily reality.--Katherine H.
